Fan Carving on Display

An old Eastern European wood-carving technique is now on display at the Bristol Public Library. Artist Chandra Peterson, of Chandra’s Passions, is one of only twenty people in the United States that creates unique pieces of art using Fan Carving.

Mrs. Peterson, of North Bloomfield, said fan carving began with soldiers that carved during their down time. It is folk art that she uses to create one-of-a-kind birds from a single piece of wood. She uses wet white cedar to slice feather after feather, then folds them into place; no glue or staples are used. The process for making one bird takes as long as two weeks, from receiving the block of wood to the finished piece.

This must-see display is in the library’s display case on the second floor through the end of March.
